The Penderwicks have captivated our family. I stumbled upon this series by Jeanne Birdsall last summer, read them on my own, then read them to my daughter, and now I'm subjecting the entire family to the audio versions as we make our way through the summer months. We are currently listening to book three, where the characters spend a few weeks at a beach along the eastern coast. It sounds dreamy: summer storms, sleeping in a screened-in porch, early morning walks along the shore. I want to go to Point Mouette!!
Skye Penderwick, the O.A.P. (you'll have to read it to know) for this book, is the spunkiest girl around. And of her four sisters, Skye is the only one with blue eyes. As I painted this little beauty, I saw reflected in its shape and structure a personality akin to Skye's: sassy, spunky, and smart. And though this set of drawers tries to be rigid and more of a "tom boy," she can't help but show a little curve around her edges. A perfect balance I'd say.
