Red Ranger

"The Red Ranger Came Calling" has got to be one of my all-time favorite children's books. Even though it's a Christmas theme, I read it all year.  Berkeley Breathed is a genius in both diction and illustration.  You might recognize his work from the comic strip "Bloom County" and the book-turned-movie "Mars Needs Moms." But please do yourself a favor and check out this book (and Flawed Dogs, currently in production as a Dreamworks movie as well as Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big).

When I got a call from Mrs. H to do a sideboard-turned-entertainment console that could support a hefty flat screen, I was thrilled.  She delivered the piece, insisting I use the same "Tricycle" red chalk paint as Major Hepplewhite.  As I worked on this piece leading up to Christmas, I recalled the "hero" of the Breathed book, the Red Ranger.  Equally saucy and full of personality, I knew this sideboard personified the little boy who couldn't help but believe.

Love the red...and the oversized knobs.  I also love the idea of repurposing a sideboard as an entertainment console.  Doubt this will be the last I do of these.
